Base Jumping Statistics

I will cover a couple of base jumping statistics. Base jumping IS a dangerous sport, and it will always be due to it’s nature. You have to make split second decisions that often result in death or serious injury.

  •  95% of all base jumpers spend at least 2 weeks + in hospital during their time jumping.
  •  5% of all base jumper DIE
  •  It is estimated that one of 2,340 BASE Jumps someone dies. (in contrast to 1 in 117,000 skydives)

Blinc magazine is a good resource for fatality statistics:
http://www.blincmagazine.com/forum/wiki/Fatality_Statistics

- According to them, off heading cliff strike is the most common source of death, wingsuit jumps being the second.
- For the year 2010 they already recorded 15 deaths.
- A total of 45 deaths in america and 28 in switzerland (the alps are a famous base jumping venue)

Due to the small amount of people base jumping, these statistics are not that reliable when it comes to caculating the odds of injury or death. It is certain though, that base jumping can and will (with a 5% chance) kill you.
